In light of the recent full activation of the Social Assistance Database, in recent years, Social Services Information Systems have undergone a profound transformation.
This book, over fifteen years after Law 328/2000, aims to update and revitalise the debate on the evolution of Social Information Systems in our country – both at the central level and in its territorial variations – proposing a definitional hypothesis of a National Social Information System Model within the existing regulatory framework and outlining its constitutive features.

The proposal intends to make a concrete contribution to the engineering and rationalisation of existing systems on the national landscape, within the logic of a Social Information System capable of meeting the diverse informational needs of its various users.

The approach used here, although based on solid principles of information theory and knowledge engineering, is primarily pragmatic, aiming to suggest to public decision-makers a feasible pathway for integrating the many disparate and unorganised information systems, databases, and data flows that have accumulated at the national level in the field of social policies. The Social Assistance Database can serve as an important, though not exhaustive, opportunity for the rationalisation of the existing systems.

The book also presents a critical analysis of the evolution of Italian Regional Social Information Systems, outlining the challenges and opportunities the Social Assistance Database presents to the Regions regarding decision-making processes, programming, and policy evaluation.
